A friend of mine, in her 30′s and after nearly 10 years of me pestering her to do it, found herself enrolling in college and heading back to school (kind of like Rodney Dangerfield, just not rich).  Since then, she’s been agonizing about finding a way to carry all her stuff.  She wants a messenger bag or something like that, because, as she put it, "I’m going back to college, not kindergarten.  I want to look professional." 

I objected, since I carred a backpack all through college and graduate school, but then I admitted that she had a point.  Messenger bags are generally cooler than backpacks, even expensive, high quality LL Bean backpacks like mine (I still use it, 7 years after date of purchase, as my carry-on luggage).  I still believe that backpacks are more useful than messenger bags, and more importantly, backpacks can be cool, too!
