Given that Apple has its own separate event, the big news coming out of the Consumer Electronics Show this year revolves around Google. While they’ve had cell phones before, and their Android phone OS powers several phones, there’s no official Google phone. At least, there isn’t until tomorrow.
On Tuesday, Google has a big special event at CES 2010, and the scuttlebutt is that they’ll be officially launching the Nexus One, the first official Google phone. This is possibly the worst kept secret in electronics, as pricing details from Google and cell service provider T-Mobile are already leaked to the public. Still, there’s one interesting detail.
While the phone will be subsidized by T-Mobile (as most phones are), you can buy an unlocked version of the Nexus One for a reported $530. Yes, it’s steep, but you can bring your own service plan then, rather than being locked into T-Mobile’s plan. That means you can go with Verizon, AT&T, or whoever you might want while not sacrificing your ability to get the hottest smartphone in the industry.
