Google Moving Into Living Rooms Again

Google TV, soon to be replaced by something else?

Google has already made one attempt to move from your web search provider of choice to your entertainment console of choice with the mostly-unsuccessful Google TV venture.  Google, at that time, had to partner with technology providers in a joint venture.  Well, that went about as well as expected (I.E., not at all well).  That said, Google’s trying again.  Google is reportedly at work on an entertainment device to go into the living room.  Consider it Google TV 2.0 and according to experts, it’s an important next step in Google’s evolution.

“Google’s future depends on extending its influence beyond the PC screen,” said said Forrester analyst James McQuivey.  ”They’ve made tremendous progress in the mobile phone business, but their attempts to do the same thing with the TV and tablet flopped because the hardware manufacturers they relied on were not able to move fast enough.”

So Google is following in the Apple motif of moving from software or service into hardware.  Can they pull it off?  I don’t know; they’ve got the failure of Google TV over their heads, but Apple had multiple terrible devices before hitting on the iPod/iPad/iTunes.  If you design the device properly, people will flock to it and ignore your past.  The key is to get this device right if Google is to have any future in the entertainment industry.
